Saturday in Memphis TN

The day began early for the Rhodes Open Meet 10k runners. A 6:30 a.m. (CST) bus ride to the track for a 8 a.m. start time for the women. The weather was wonderful for the distance events–overcast and 60˚ with little, if any, wind. Jessica Koster was able to work with this winter's NCAA indoor 5k champion Elise Tropiano (Amherst College) to run a strong qualifying time of 35:49.00. It was great to see the two women trade pace making duties on their way to fast times. Her's was the first of mutiple distance running personal bests that day.

While the cooler weather continued to result in hot times in the distance events, a light rain from about 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. put a damper on many of the sprints and field event performances. Fortunately, everyone was able to find a spot in the gymnasium to stay dry and take a quick nap between events.

The first spring break meet (along with the 10 hour bus rides) is when many Calvin athletes are first able to spend any length of time with athletes from other events. This decades long tradition of traveling south during our break from classes is key to bringing our Calvin track & field community (100+ folks) closer together. The coaches always wonder where the bonds will be built and who will find life long friendships.

A riddle written by Jessica Zylstra:
Small and not tall,
at the drop of a ball,
away without fall,
God knows if it falls.
